True Riches Have Eternal Value

The Church of Laodicea was saying they were rich, but God was saying they were poor.

  • Revelation 3:17-18 – You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.

They had even locked Jesus (the source of true riches) outside.

v20 – Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.

Jesus gave the parable of the Rich Fool, to show the dangers of being rich on worldly standards and poor before God.

  • Luke 12:13-21 -Parable of the Rich Fool

Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

14 Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” 15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”

16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’

18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’

20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’

21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”

  • 1 Timothy 6:17-21 shows the uncertainty of worldly riches, and in v18 we are encouraged to be RICH in GOOD DEEDS, being GENEROUS and WILLING to SHARE.
  • 1 Timothy 4:7-8 – Encourages us not to be engaged in useless debates and discussions which do not add value.
  • Titus 3:9-11Do not get involved in foolish discussions about spiritual pedigrees or in quarrels and fights about obedience to Jewish laws. These things are useless and a waste of time. 10 If people are causing divisions among you, give a first and second warning. After that, have nothing more to do with them. 11 For people like that have turned away from the truth, and their own sins condemn them.
  • Matthew 6:19-2119 “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. 21 Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
  • Luke 10:2 shows us that winning souls is being wise and rich towards God (Proverbs 11:30).  (v2) The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore to send out workers into his harvest field.

Reflection: Serving God and winning souls has eternal value. Everyday people are dying, BUT where are they going?
