The wedding supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:1-10)

This will take place straight away on the overthrow of Babylon because this could not be celebrated while the harlot Babylon, who represents the false church and pretended to be the bride of Christ remained not judged. The great prostitute had corrupted the earth by her adulteries and she was drunk with the blood of the saints, the blood of those who bore testimony of Jesus(Rev 17:6)  In the Spirit John heard great shouting in heaven like the roar of great multitude giving glory to God; for salvation and power belong to him. The great prostitute had been condemned prior to the wedding supper of the lamb, and God has avenged for the blood of his servants.

The great prostitute which had become the home of demons (representing the kingdom of darkness) was now fallen for ever and ever. Her beauty was gone (purple dress, and scarlet, glittering gold, precious stones and pearls and was filled with abominable things and filled with adultery (Rev 17: 4)). She made merchants rich and Kings committed adultery with her (Rev 18: 5). The kingdom of darkness might look attractive/ beautiful and full of riches. It might even look good to follow after this harlot because of her riches and beauty; but God will bring her to ruin and we should come out of her so that we do not share in her sins and receive any of her plagues (Rev 18: 4).  God will judge the wicked, all those who do not fear him, all those who do not obey him and all those who have rejected his salvation through Jesus Christ. God will destroy the wicked systems of this world. The bride of Christ should not defile herself with the wickedness of the world; but she should keep herself pure. Persecutions and troubles may come from the world(wicked leaders, jealousy, hatred and from many sources); but eventually God will avenge for her bride.

Then the twenty four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who was seated on the throne. God is worthy of being worshiped for mighty are his works and He has power over the kingdom of darkness. Satan might persecute the church of Christ and shed her blood but eventually God will avenge for her bride and destroy the works of Satan eternally. All the servants of the Lord who fear him are to praise him regardless of their status, whether small or great.  All God’s servants should rejoice and be glad because our Lord God Almighty reigns and he’s worthy of all glory.

The marriage will take place in heaven. The bridegroom is Christ. This can be seen as the fulfillment of Jesus words in Matthew 22, which is a great delight to God. It is also written that Christ loved the Church and gave Himself to it (Ephesians 5:25). Christ will present the church as glorious without spot or wrinkle. The Church is the body of Christ.  The bride (body of Christ) has made herself ready for the wedding and those who have been invited for this wedding supper are called blessed. And these are the true sayings of God. The celebration begins in heaven but also continues on the earth upon Christ Jesus return.

The best relationship between God and man is linked unto a marriage. In the Old Testament, God’s relationship with Israel was like a husband to a wife. When God said, “Her desire shall be to her husband”, can also be seen to imply he was also expressing His wish for Israel. When Israel turned to worship idols, God saw this as adultery/fornication and grieved as a husband betrayed. He could seek to woo her back. The husband wife figure is taken up in this chapter of revelation to show the relationship of Christ and His church. In Paul’s Epistles, he expressed his desire to the Corinthians to present them to Christ as a pure virgin. The Church of Christ is the bride waiting for her wedding day.

In John’s vision, there were shouts in heaven saying, “let us rejoice and be glad for the marriage of the lamb has come”. This is a day of joy when we as the church stand together with Christ and hive him honour. The bride is a beauty to behold, filled with joy and excitement, her beautiful white gown, which is of fine linen which represents the righteous acts of the saints. The priests were wearing robes of linen as wool would cause them to perspire which expresses work (secretly sweating after working). Salvation is the work of God and not ours. The righteousness the bride has is not her own but of Christ through putting her faith in him.

The Apostle Paul was jealous over the Corinthians with godly jealousy, for he has espoused them to one husband, which is Christ (2Corinthians 11:2). Jesus was also asked one day by the Pharisees how it was that the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fasted often and yet his disciples did not fast. In response he said that you cannot make the children of the bride chamber fast while the bridegroom is with them, but a day will come when the bride groom will be taken away from them and they shall fast in those days.

The relationship between Christ and her Church is illustrated when husband are admonished to love their wives as Christ loved the Church and gave himself for it; so that he could sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word. That he might present it to himself a glorious church without spot or wrinkle, or any such thing, but it should be holy and without blemish. (Ephesians 5:25). Paul called the allegory a great mystery between Christ and the Church.  Now John saw great rejoicing in heaven because the great day of this mystery Paul was talking about had come.

At the present, the Church is espoused to Christ and the marriage will be consummated during the wedding ceremony which the Church has been invited to and she has made herself ready.
